Speaking with Stephania was sort of rocky. We were about to find her, pretending to take a tour of the main building, but she floated in and joined us.

“Oh my goodness, Jackie, if only you informed me such a dashingly handsome man was here, I’d have changed into something prettier.” Her current attire was a gorgeous lace and embroidered dress, along with heavy makeup and numerous rings of huge gemstones. “Why didn’t you tell me about him? Mmm… he’s sooo my type!” Between chiding Jackie, fluffing her hair and the balloon skirt she was sporting, she continually crept closer to Rick. “Hello, handsome. I’m Stephania D’Argento.” She looked to be around two hundred, but according to her, she was ninety-six when she passed.

“He doesn’t see or hear people like us,” Jackie informed her.

“Did you feel something?” I asked Rick as he frowned.

“I don’t know. It was as if a bug crawled on my neck.” He scratched that area and looked at me, his eyes widened as she kissed his earlobe.

“You don’t wanna know.” Jackie shook her head.

“Stephania sent you a warm hi.” I gave him a piece of gentrified info.

“That’s it?” He arched an eyebrow as I smiled at her.

“Hi, Stephania. I’m Jackie’s friend, Mandy, and this is my husband, Rick.” I did a little wave at the ghost.

“Uh-huh. Hi.” She did a halfhearted one in return. “All the good-looking guys are either married or dead.” Jackie inclined her head in agreement. “What do you want to know? I can’t guarantee I’d be able to help as I always go on vacation during that week.”

Basically, she was a total chatterbox. She fed us all the juicy gossip about the residents, yet it seemed irrelevant. According to her, Sarah enjoyed ogling videos of naked men on the internet, which, Stephania herself did as well. Eloise was a boring woman whose primary interest was exclusively focused on her family business, and Kevin was the worst to watch because he was withdrawn.

“When he came home after I returned from my trip, I wondered if Eloise had divorced her former hubby and got a new one.” Stephania floated. “Kevin used to be a total social butterfly, attending all the parties he could. Sometimes I can’t help wondering about his secrets. He must’ve forgotten those, too, right?”

“What were they?” Jackie and I asked in unison, and Rick chimed in to remind us to tell him what she said.

“Well, I’m just talking about what I saw, you know.” Stephania shrugged. “Before his personality change, I occasionally caught him hiding stuff from his wife. I mean, they were little goods like a handkerchief and keyfob. I don’t know why—as it’s not like he was forbidden from shopping for himself.”

As for John Harris, she had little to say. “I used to find him endearing when he was younger, but recently, I hate his tan.”

“It looks like something he purchased from a salon,” Jackie commented.

“What do you think about the butler?” Rick asked.

“Mr. Butler? He’s cute, you know.
